The Ghana Music Awards, now known as the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs), is an annual celebration of outstanding work in the Ghanaian music industry. Established in 1999 by CharterHouse, the event recognizes and rewards Ghanaian musicians for their contributions to the growth and expansion of the music industry
The Ghana Music Awards has been a benchmark for excellence in the Ghanaian music industry for over two decades. Initially sponsored by Vodafone, the event was known as the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs). However, in 2024, the sponsorship changed to Telecel, resulting in the name change to Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs)
However,In 2020, the event was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to the cancellation of the nominees' jam. In 2019, the "Artist of the Year" award was not announced due to a controversy involving Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy.
Recent winners of the "Artist of the Year" award include Kuami Eugene (2020), Diana Hamilton (2021), Black Sherif (2022), Blacko (2023), and King Promise (2025).
The Ghana Music Awards features various categories, including Artist of the Year:Recognizing the most outstanding artist of the year.Song of the Year:Honoring the best song of the year.Best New Artist: Awarded to emerging artists who have made a significant impact.
The event is usually broadcast on local television stations such as GHOne TV, GTV, and TV3, and previously on DStv and GOtv.
